Location

Žetale is located in the upper part of Rogatnica valley at an altitude around 300 m, at the intersection  of the roads from Podlehnik, Majšperk in Rogatec. On east they reach the main road Maribo – Zagreb, on south is the forested Macelj (peak – border with Croatia, the spring of Sotle), to the west is Resenik (773 m) and Donačka mountain (883 m).

History of Žetale

Žetale was first mentioned in the Baberber’s  register in 1228 under the name Shiltern. The parish chirch St.  Mihaela dates back from 14. century. According to it in 15. century the area was called Miholova vas. Nearby is located baroque chirch of pilgrimage Marija Tolažnica (locally most known as Marijatrošt) at Brezje (from the beginning of 18. century). The area has obtained its current name after the Second World War.

Short presentation of Žetale municipality

As independent Žetale municipality was established on 1.1.1999. It consists of the following areas: Žetale, Nadole, Dobrina, Kočice and Čermožiše. The surface of the municipality is 38 km2, the number of houses is 494, the population is 1364.

 It is located on the southwest part of Haloze. 60% of the territory of Žetale municipality is covered with forests, that is why geographically it belongs to forested Haloze. The territory of the municipality is extraordinarily agitated, as steep slopes are typical for it. Generally it is hilly, only the narrow valleys enable normal traffic conections with the rest of the world.

The center of the municipality is village Žetale, where all most important institutions are located: primary school, clinic, local authority, parish office, the seat of municipality.

Žetale municipality is frontier and explicitly demographically threatened municipality. Decline in population has been recorded after the Second World War. The tendency of decline has not ended yet. That is why one of the basic goals of the municipality is to ensure its inhabitants better living conditions. The inhibitants of  Žetale municipality are mainly dealing with farming, where animal breeding, some wine production and fruit growing prevails. As there are no working places in the area most of the inhabitants are employed out of our municipality. The natural resources enable the development of tourism and here we see our future.
